There have been many accidents related to plugs not being wired correctly. Below is a step by step guide of how to wire / re-wire a plug.
Tools Needed: A Screwdriver (Usually Flathead) A Knife or Wire Cutters Preparing The Plug: 1. Remove the cover of the plug and put it and its brass screw aside. 2. On the top of each pin you will see a small brass screw loosen these but don't take them out (as they can be a pain to get back in) Preparing The Cable: 1. Measure the cable against the plug and strip the outer covering back as far as the cord grip. N.B. Be careful at this stage and don't cut through the coloured insulation. 2. Ensuring each wire can reach its pin strip about 15mm of coloured insulation from each wire. Wiring The Plug: Remember which wires go where! BROWN to the LIVE (L) terminal BLUE to the NEUTRAL (N) GREEN/YELLOW to the EARTH (E) terminal.
1. Pass the flex under the loosened cord grip. 2. Twist the exposed wire strands of each core between the finger and thumb so that there are no loose strands. 3. Double the twisted bare wire back on itself for about 5 mm and insert it fully into the hole in the appropriate terminal. Tighten the terminal screw firmly on the wire. 4. Tighten the cord grip screws, making sure that the cord grip is clamped on the full outer covering of the cable and not on the inner cores. 5. Replace the Cover |
